Experienced, Knowledgeable, Competent

I provide intensive, systematic instruction.

I use programs that address phonics, phonemic awareness. fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Instruction is systematic - building skills gradually, introducing them in isolation and then integrating them with the other skills. I  provide frequent opportunities for practice and provide specific feedback that is positive and helpful.

I will start by giving your child a comprehensive reading evaluation that will pinpoint your child's strengths and weakness. I will use this information to develop a personalized learning plan. This plan will be tailored to meet your child's specific needs and allow them to learn at their own pace. At the same time they will be building the skills and confidence to become readers for life. To enhance your child's success I am willing to communicate with your child's teacher(s).

I will use a 50 minute session on Zoom for students Kindergarten through Second grade. During each lesson I will use a Structured Literacy approach which prepares students to decode words in a explicit and systematic manner.

Also , after the current restrictions that are in place due to the COVID-19 crisis have eased I will be able to provide in person sessions at your home, your local library, or at my home located in the 16 Acres section of Springfield or continue using Zoom if preferred.

To help you better understand how I will be helping your child

phonics - the connection between letters and their sounds

phonemic awareness - the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds

fluency - the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression

vocabulary - knowledge of words and word meanings

comprehension - the understanding and interpretation of what is read

Noelle Garneau - Schoolwide Early Intervention Coordinator and Reading Specialist

I highly recommend Ellen May as a reading tutor. She is knowledgeable regarding implementation of several scientific, research-based intervention programs including Wilson Foundations. However Ellen's true gift is her ability to connect with her students. She considers the whole child when working with her students; she meets children where they are with their skill development and she determines what is need to help them make progress. Children succeed with Ellen because they know she cares about them, and she helps them grow their confidence in their abilities. Ellen is an excellent tutor for students at any level seeking to improve their reading.
